ELLE Decor A-List Designer Alyssa Kapito Launches New Furniture Collection Inspired by Personal Renovation
Designer Alyssa Kapito, known for her keen eye and unique style, has recently launched her second collection, called Edition 2, just over a year after introducing her Galerie with a line of Murano glass vases. This new collection reflects her personal journey during a three-year home renovation and features a carefully curated selection of furniture, including a sideboard, buffet, cocktail table, and nightstand.
The collection is deeply personal to Kapito, who emphasized the importance of choosing designs that resonate with her own tastes. "I wanted this collection to be the things that I loved the most, that I would use over and over again," she explained. Throughout the selection process, Kapito adhered to a straightforward set of criteria, honing in on timeless forms, cherished materials, and a balanced sense of proportion and scale. She noted that the most significant challenge was deciding which pieces to put into production for a wider audience and which to reserve for private commissions.
Kapito drew inspiration from mid-century French designers like Jean Royere, Jean Prouve, and ceramist Georges Jouve. She admired their use of simple materials and their focus on elegant forms over unnecessary embellishment. "A lot of the thought behind these pieces is just that: simple materials in thoughtful ways that feel timeless but also somewhat contemporary," stated Kapito. Each piece in the new collection is crafted uniquely and made-to-order in Paris and New York, allowing buyers to choose from various finishes such as shagreen, lacquer, parchment, and glass.
The customization options available in the Edition 2 collection encourage enthusiasts to mix and match different styles and eras, creating unexpected yet fascinating combinations. Kapito highlighted that placing seemingly unrelated pieces together can result in an intriguing aesthetic. "Sometimes it’s about form, or color, or medium, and sometimes it’s about that awesome tension that happens when they don’t match at all, like a Donald Judd sculpture next to a Louis the 16th mantel," she noted. This playful mix-and-match approach not only showcases individual creativity but can also enhance the overall decor of a room.
In summary, Alyssa Kapito’s Edition 2 collection stands out as a thoughtfully curated line of furniture that echoes her personal style and design philosophy. With its emphasis on timeless design and customizable options, the collection invites collectors and enthusiasts alike to embrace the art of mixing and matching various styles to create unique spaces. Each piece reflects a blend of simplicity and sophistication, making this new release a noteworthy addition to the world of interior design.
With her extensive experience in the field, Kapito continues to make waves as a designer who not only creates beautiful furniture but also inspires others to explore their own unique tastes and preferences within their homes.
