New York Designer Fawn Galli Realizes Her Dream of a Parisian Apartment
PARIS – For countless visitors to Paris, the city evokes dreams of one day calling it home, even if just for a little while. Few have turned that dream into reality as successfully as designer Fawn Galli, who recently completed her dream apartment in the heart of the City of Lights. Galli, who spent a transformative year in Paris as an au pair during her twenties, has now crafted a beautiful pied-à-terre in the vibrant Left Bank.
"My time in Paris has always held a special place in my heart," Galli explains. After leaving the city, she pursued a successful career in design, working with prestigious names such as Robert A.M. Stern and Peter Marino before establishing her own firm. Her eclectic designs and bold color choices gained her a loyal following, but the allure of Paris remained a lingering aspiration.
Years later, as her son set off to college and the dollar strengthened against the euro, Galli felt a renewed resolution to pursue her dream. "I told myself: I’m finally going to do it—I’m going to Paris and buy an apartment," she said. Initially, her vision was modest, looking for a cozy one or two-bedroom space in a central arrondissement like the 5th. However, a whirlwind trip led to unexpected discoveries.
In a single weekend, Galli viewed four different apartments, but it was a three-bedroom Haussmannian-style flat near Saint-Germain-des-Prés that captured her heart. The apartment’s classic architectural features, including intricately carved cornices and honey-colored herringbone parquet floors, enchanted her. Galli prioritized preserving these original details, enlisting local architecture firm Atelier UNDO for the project.
The design process involved maintaining the apartment’s historic charm while updating it for modern living. Galli worked closely with the team to refresh the original architecture and rearrange the layout to create an additional bedroom. The transformation allowed the once-dark space to be flooded with natural light, enhancing its inviting atmosphere.
Galli’s design philosophy embraces the character of the building, marrying the old-world elegance of Paris with contemporary needs. Her commitment to retaining key architectural features while creating functional living space reflects a thoughtful approach to interior design that honors both history and personal experience.
With her dream apartment finally realized, Galli’s Parisian home serves as a testament to the belief that dreams can be achieved with persistence and passion. Many visitors may daydream about returning to Paris, but for Galli, what began as a youthful wish has blossomed into a tangible reality. Her journey from au pair to accomplished designer highlights the enduring appeal of this magnificent city, reminding us of the magic embedded within its streets and homes.
