Gujarat’s Rehethaan: A Fusion of Tradition and Modern Design
In 2024, designers Huzefa Rangwala and Jasem Pirani from Mumbai’s MuseLAB completed an extraordinary family home in Gujarat, named Rehethaan. Encompassing 13,000 square feet, this residence integrates a variety of influences, showcasing an artistic blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern living. Situated along India’s stunning west coast with views of the Gulf waters, Rehethaan reflects the rich artisanship typical of the region.
Upon entering the home, visitors are greeted by a striking brass lattice that draws inspiration from Kutch textiles. This lattice, reminiscent of colorful traditional embroidery, creates a beautiful dappled light effect throughout the space. The interior design of Rehethaan is characterized by its airy and light atmosphere, featuring vaulted ceilings and expansive windows that allow natural light to fill the home. Clerestory windows further enhance this brilliant illumination while blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The central family room seamlessly connects to a serene verandah composed of terracotta and marble, promoting a sense of tranquility. Each area in the home feels like an art gallery, given its spacious proportions and the rich array of art and objects displayed. Collaborations with various artists and brands, such as DemuroDas, Gessi, and The Pure Concept Home, add unique pieces to the decor.
Attention to detail is evident throughout Rehethaan. The sculptural staircase is particularly noteworthy, adorned with light orbs and murals created by the Indian studio House of Berserk. In addition to this, the ceiling of the formal living room features intricate textures and statement lighting pieces by Olie. Every element, even down to the dual-toned arched ‘hoods’ over the doorways, has been thoughtfully curated to elevate the home’s aesthetic.
The dining room boasts stylish King Pin chairs, while the kitchen includes a distinctive island with a built-in gelato case, highlighting the home’s modern conveniences. Each bedroom has its own character, with one designed in warm tangerine and peach tones, paired with terrazzo skirting, offering a cozy vibe. Another bedroom showcases a mixture of materials like wood, cork, and brick, alongside an ensuite finished in warm sienna and caramel tones.
Perhaps one of the standout features of Rehethaan is its guest bathroom, adorned with mosaic tiles that form a captivating pixelated effect. In contrast, the master bath presents an opulent retreat, draped in Azul Calcite stone which bathed the space in vibrant colors.
Overall, Rehethaan masterfully balances cultural heritage with contemporary design. Its unique incorporation of local artistic elements and thoughtful modern touches creates an inviting and stylish family home that reflects its surroundings. This luxurious residence stands as a testament to the excellence of Gujarati craftsmanship, making it a remarkable example of modern architecture infused with rich tradition.
